Audit in London
Moore Stephens provides both internal and external audit functions. Our trainees are normally recruited into an external audit role.
External audit is the examination of an organisation’s accounts in order to provide assurance to the owners that they are ‘true and fair’. In other words, that they are an accurate reflection of the organisation’s financial actions for a period of time.
All audit functions require you to understand our clients. Therefore, much of your time is spent at client sites. New trainees are involved in a range of activities such as
- ensuring accuracy of raised invoices and expenses
- checking valuations of stock or company assets
- discussing depreciation, and
- drafting relevant sections of accounts.
As you progress you would complete more complex areas of the audit file and supervise the work of junior staff.
Moore Stephens LLP’s audit groups are divided according to the client sector in which they specialise. Trainees are annually recruited into the following groups:
The Audit Services Group (ASG) is the largest pool of trainees in the firm. The first two years of your training contract are spent working with managers and partners of the Finance, Property and General Business Group (FPGB) and the International Business Group (IBG). After two years, you are assigned to continue your career with one of these groups.
FPGB
Finance, Property and General Business provides audit, accounting and advisory services to a wide range of largely UK but also some international based businesses.
The main areas of work are
- Companies regulated by the Financial Services Authority, provision of assistance to regulated entities on compliance and other regulatory issues;
- Property management and investment, construction
- Professional practices (people businesses)
- Hotels, clubs and restaurants
- Pension schemes
- Charities
- Portfolio includes listed entities, owner managed businesses, partnerships, LLPs and associations.
IBG
The International Business Group specialises in assurance and advisory services for family offices and global corporates. Family office clients include overseas family trusts, investment funds and their personal and corporate interests. Corporate clients include multi-national groups and companies operating in the shipping, property investment, energy and technology sectors.
The Insurance Group provides audit services and advice on a wide range of issues including loss-reserving, taxation, solvency and regulatory compliance, management information systems, litigation support, forensic accounting and due diligence. With a century of experience in the insurance sector, it is probably not surprising that we are viewed as one of the leading advisors to the industry.
Our clients include London underwriters, insurance and reinsurance companies, P&I clubs and other mutuals and London market and retail brokers. We are also on the Lloyd’s panel of registered auditors.
Insurance Group trainees develop not only their auditing abilities, but also an understanding of this unique sector.
The Public Sector Group provides audit and consultancy services to public sector bodies within the UK, the EU and worldwide.
In England and Wales, Moore Stephens provides external audit and governance, IT and risk and assurance services, including internal audit, principally to central government departments, trading funds, non-departmental public bodies, government agencies and education. We have worked with the National Audit Office (NAO) since 1998 and as framework partners, provide audit and assurance services to entities within the Home Office, Justice, Defence, DFID, Foreign & Commonwealth Office, DEFRA and Health.
As a trainee, the majority of your time will be working closely with the NAO to audit UK public bodies. It is likely that there will be significant travel in your role and many assignments will require you to obtain security clearance.
The group also provides audit and investigatory services to the European Union. Although your primary role will be spent working on UK audits, you may be asked to assist with auditing internationally funded projects in Europe and worldwide.
Business Tax
The Business Tax team provides taxation computation and advisory services to a wide range of largely UK, but also some internationally based businesses. The team works with clients to help minimise their tax cash outflows, including using tax minimisation strategies to reduce liabilities.
As a trainee you will work with senior staff to provide high quality service to clients in respect of preparing taxation computations. As you progress, you will become responsible for your own client portfolio.
Moore Stephens network members across the UK manage their recruitment independently. Please contact offices directly in order to learn of their current opportunities.
