Strength amidst uncertainty in 2017: the retail and wholesale sector view

Our survey, completed by 691 business leaders from across the UK, finds continued uncertainty amongst owner managed businesses (OMBs). This view is shared in the retail and wholesale sector where are among the least confident businesses in this year’s survey. Only just over half (51%) are confident about the general outlook for 2017, compared to 59% of all OMBs surveyed.

Despite their relatively low optimism, retail and wholesale OMBs are more likely than OMBs generally to be launching new products and services this year – 52% say they are certain or very likely to do so, compared to 44% of OMBs overall. Over half (51%) plan to expand their UK customer base, while 42% expect to develop new products and services (both are roughly in line with the overall survey). This UK focus spreads into their concerns as well, with top economic concerns being the strength of the UK economy (66%), and domestic competition (55% compared to 40% of OMBs overall).
