61% of UK tech sector business owners say the Government is not listening to their concerns when it comes to the Brexit negotiations.

Our annual survey of tech businesses also revealed that 41% of UK tech businesses’ main concern about Brexit was a shortage of EU labour.

Recent data shows a fifth of all tech jobs in London are currently filled by EU workers*. Outside of the EU, the information and communication sector has the most demand for highly skilled visas.**

If EU workers will require visas after Brexit, this could have serious knock on effect on the ability of UK tech businesses to hire the best staff.

Given the importance of the tech sector to the UK economy, their voice should be listened to in advance of the Brexit negotiations. The technology sector is now worth £184bn to the UK economy and grew 2.6*** times faster than the rest of the economy between 2016 and 2017.

Mark Ayres, Head of Technology comments: “The tech sector is still in the dark over the Government’s plans for Brexit, less than a year until the UK leaves.

“Seeing as all other governments of the last 20 years have courted the tech sector very closely, it is worrying to see so many tech entrepreneurs feel like they are not being listened to.”

Business owners fear for the UK economy in 2018

The survey also shows 71% of tech business owners have major concerns over the strength of the UK economy in 2018, and the effect it will have on their businesses.

The concerns highlight an unrest amongst entrepreneurs across all sectors, after the economy grew at the slowest pace for five years in Q1 2018.

Mark Ayres says: “The technology sector in the UK will always be a key hub for the European Tech ecosystem, and there remain many reasons for tech businesses to operate from the UK. “However tech business owners will want an environment that enables their companies to flourish in the long term.”
